Sport collectible items that I looked into and found interesting were the resales of Michael Jordan’s Wheaties boxes. Jordan’s partnership with Wheaties is undeniably legendary, as he was featured on the cereal box a total of 19 times (more than any other athlete). However, according to some collectors, certain Jordan Wheaties box versions were more rare than others, therefore justifying their high resale value. For instance, the 1989 Wheaties Box that I found on Ebay showcases Jordan breaking through the box and includes a promo for a free poster inside. For reference, the average value of a Michael Jordan box of Wheaties was sold in grocery stores for $12.58. The empty, wrapped box of cereal that I found on Ebay is being sold at a starting price of $100. Now, I could understand how collectors would want to obtain this iconic branding for arguably the best basketball player to ever play the game, but what I found interesting about this specific collectible was that it was a cereal box. Just a normal box of Wheaties that was in almost every Chicago household in the 1980’s. So, it humored me to think of the original owner of the box thinking to themselves in 1989 that they should save the cereal box with Michael Jordan’s face on it instead of just recycling it. But, this collector wasn’t the only person with this same idea, as Ebay had a lot of Jordan’s other Wheaties boxes going for very similar prices. Ultimately, these retailers made the correct decision to not throw away their cereal boxes, and, like they anticipated, they now have potential of making a decent profit off of them.
